Prior Creation Care Sunday Programs

2021- We encouraged our members to watch “Kiss the Ground”, a full-length documentary narrated by Woody Harrelson that sheds light on a “new, old approach” to farming called “regenerative agriculture” that has the potential to balance our climate, replenish our vast water supplies, and feed the world. Afterwards, we held a roundtable discussion over Zoom to discuss the film and how its message impacts our lives here in Central PA.

2020- Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we held a Zoom presentation led by Don Brown from the Widener University Law School. He spoke about ethical principles and how to include them in the climate change conversation.

2019- To promote our new wildflower meadow, Stefan Karkuff gave a presentation highlighting native wildflowers, how to plant them, and the benefits they provide for wildlife. We passed out wildflower seed packs for members to take home. Following the pollinator theme, Betsy Eichelberger and Tanya Wagner baked bee and butterfly-shaped cakes for snacks, and Emma Wahlig helped young kids construct cardboard bees and butterflies out of recycled toilet paper rolls and assorted decorations.

2018- Tanya Wagner and Bill Schneider gave a wonderful presentation on the Peace Garden, explaining its history at Silver Spring, and also discussed plant selection and maintenance for a planned restoration. They also spoke about the importance of prayer gardens in the Christian faith. The following week, John Childe, attorney for the Pennsylvania Environmental Defense Foundation spoke on a recent Pennsylvania Supreme Court case interpreting the Environmental Amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution. Meanwhile, the Sunday School youth joined Stefan Karkuff, Jane Anabe, and Eleanor Resser in creating a “tippy tap”, a hands-free device for washing hands which was later installed near the playground.

2017- We had over 50 individuals attend a presentation in the gymnasium by Stefan Karkuff entitled Birds in Your Backyard. Birdwatching is one of America’s most popular outdoor activities, and Stefan discussed the many ways to attract birds to your backyard. Chuck Eichelberger and Flip Jones worked late nights to construct over 50 bluebird boxes to send home with our church members for placement in their own yards.
