Genesis 2:5-8, and 15-20 The Message

5-7 At the time God made Earth and Heaven, before any grasses or shrubs had sprouted from the ground—God hadn’t yet sent rain on Earth, nor was there anyone around to work the ground (the whole Earth was watered by underground springs)—God formed Man out of dirt from the ground and blew into his nostrils the breath of life. The Man came alive a living soul!

8-9 Then God planted a garden in Eden, in the east. He put the Man he had just made in it. God made all kinds of trees grow from the ground, trees beautiful to look at and good to eat. The Tree-of-Life was in the middle of the garden, also the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil.

15 God took the Man and set him down in the Garden of Eden to work the ground and keep it in order.

16-17 God commanded the Man, “You can eat from any tree in the garden, except from the Tree-of-Knowledge-of-Good-and-Evil. Don’t eat from it. The moment you eat from that tree, you’re dead.”

18-20 God said, “It’s not good for the Man to be alone; I’ll make him a helper, a companion.” So, God formed from the dirt of the ground all the animals of the field and all the birds of the air. He brought them to the Man to see what he would name them. Whatever the Man called each living creature, that was its name. The Man named the cattle, named the birds of the air, named the wild animals; but he didn’t find a suitable companion. 21-22 God put the Man into a deep sleep. As he slept, he removed one of his ribs and replaced it with flesh. God then used the rib that he had taken from the Man to make Woman and presented her to the Man.

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

When I think about Earth Care and all the things that we do here at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church, I feel good about the impact we are making the environment.  But then when I watch programs such as Frozen Planet II, or do environmental research online and in magazines, which show how climate change is affecting all kinds of species in the Arctic and Antarctic, I become very afraid. Precious species such as seals, polar bears and Adelie penguins, are diminishing in numbers. I hear the loud clarion call to do more to save our environment and the earth, which God created. Preparing this sermon had me in tears with my stomach all twisted up from looking at photographs and reading studies.  Environmental injustice, just like racial and social injustices, is very real.  Environmental injustices, like overbearing pollution of many forms, are causing climate change, which is affecting all kinds of species.

For instance, take the polar bear, which lives in the Artic, and the Adelie penguin, which in the Antarctic. Global polar bear numbers are projected to decline by 30 percent by 2050, a decline which will affect all kinds of species.  Regarding the Adelie, A NASA-funded study at University of Delaware and other institutions found that approximately 30 percent of current Adelie colonies may be in decline by 2060, and approximately 60 percent of the present population might be dwindling by 2099.

Let’s talk for a moment about the Creation Stories (of which there are two in Genesis), and how we Presbyterians as a whole (thinking of the greater PC-USA) think of Creation and Evolution. As a greater church body, we honor the Genesis stories, but use evolutionary process to explain how God created the Earth.

The following information is from the PC-USA website:

  • We Presbyterians are Called by God and our Church to help save the planet:
  • Through God’s Creative Call:
  • The universe is at least 13.8 billion years and continues to bring forth new creatures.
  • That God’s God has created virtually countless stars and planetary systems, and new stars and planetary systems are continuing to be created.
  • The Earth took form at least 4.6 billion years ago.
  • Living creatures emerged on the Earth at least 3.6 billion years ago.
  • That God has connected all life on Earth in a network of kinship by virtue of biological evolution from common ancestors.
  • Homo sapiens (modern humans) emerged, in our wide diversity and different cultures, as a species over more than 6 million years of development.

Through God’s Creative Call:

  • That, in the providence of God, we Homo sapiens have come to exercise extraordinary power over other creatures and their habitats, the Earth’s geological structures, and the meteorological systems of the Earth.
  • That, by virtue of the powers of intellect and creativity called forth in us by God, we bear exceptional responsibility for the future of the Earth and all its constitutive creatures.
  • This affirmation provides a framework in which we are called to worship God, are called to proclaim the Gospel of Grace, and are called to live as faithful expressions of God’s love for the whole Creation.

Drilling down into the theory of Evolution, here’s an interesting find: Scientists believe that many elements of our bodies were formed in stars over the course of billions of years and multiple star lifetimes. However, it's also possible that some of our hydrogen (which makes up roughly 9.5 percent of our bodies) and lithium, which our body contains in very tiny trace amounts, originated from the Big Bang. We are literally “stars.” Or made of stardust.

Regardless of what you believe though: God, the Creator, is the Power behind Creation and Evolution theories and the two theories are not mutually exclusive, except for the time frame. Six days versus billions of years.   In the Genesis Creation story the stages of earth’s development are correct – void, light, dark, water, etc.

Regardless of what you believe - God has charged man, woman, child, everyone to care for the Earth.

According to the World Wildlife Fund, the greatest threats to Earth are:

Effects of Climate Change
Illegal Fishing
Illegal Wildlife Trade
Oil and Gas Development
Overfishing
Pollution
Soil Erosion and Degradation
Water Scarcity

Take plastic alone (plastic pollution is one of the causes of global warming – climate change). Here are some disturbing findings:

One hundred percent of baby sea turtles have plastic in their stomachs. There are now 5.25 trillion macro and micro pieces of plastic in our ocean and 46,000 pieces in every square mile of ocean, weighing up to 269,000 tons.  Every day around 8 million pieces of plastic make their way into our oceans. (From Condor Ferries, a UK Ferry Company whose goal is to be plastic free.) Studies show that there is at least one ton of plastic trash for each person on earth. More than 8.3 billion tons of plastic have been produced since 1950 and over half the plastic ever produced was made in the past 13+ years.

Plastic in the oceans interferes with the oceans’ capacity to absorb and isolate carbon dioxide, creating another pathway through which plastic pollution contributes to accelerate climate change. When there is more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, global temperatures rise.

What can we do church?  Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repurpose! Plant Pollinator Gardens!

Nations, including the United States are doing what they can, but so much more needs to be done.  The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL) signed into law by President Joe Biden on November 15, 2021. contains money to invest in transportation, preserve the environment, and steward the earth. This includes funding for green infrastructure, electric vehicles for government fleets, school buses, clean water for rural communities, and broadband. Green building strategies are becoming a central focus of traditional building codes. Many new regulations are addressing the categories of energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, renewables, resource conservation, and more. From coast to coast, new strategies to become carbon neutral are going into effect. (Denver, NYC, and San Francisco). Here at home, the Pennsylvania Climate Action Plan 2021 hopes to achieve Pennsylvania’s greenhouse gas reduction goals: 26 percent by 2025 and 80 percent by 2050 from 2005 levels.

In closing, I’d like to take from Rev. Dr. Rachel Mash, with Living Church:

For Christians, the despair and darkness of Good Friday are not the final word. Jesus, the Word of Life, overcomes death. At the heart of our faith is resurrection, redemption, and new life. The groaning of creation is not a hopeless pain but is described as the groaning of childbirth when agony gives way to new life. The Bible tells us of the “New Earth”. This is not another Earth in a different place. There are no Planet B. God promises us that this very Earth will be renewed. We are part of Gods redemptive plan, sadly we have almost delayed too long and the renewed Earth will bear scars just as Jesus’ body did.

It is time to rise and act, remembering that we are co-creators (planting seeds and trees) with God; we are called to renew this, our common home. We are not chaplains administering the last rites to a dying Earth. We are midwives to the new Creation. Let us not look for the living amongst the dead.

And may it be so. Amen.
