Don Wahlig

Rev. Donald B. Wahlig
Senior Pastor

Rev. Wahlig was baptized and raised at the Presbyterian Church of the Covenant near Wilmington, Delaware. Don, as he prefers to be called, graduated from the Univ. of Delaware with a BA in English Literature, then moved to New York to begin a career in advertising sales. While in New York, Don found a church home at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church. In the young adults group there, he met his wife, Beth, also a lifelong Presbyterian. During this time, Don earned an MBA from Columbia Business School and made the transition to become a marketing manager at American Express.

During this period Don and Beth moved to New Jersey to start their family. They are blessed with two daughters, Emma and Jane. Through a series of events and moving by the Holy Spirit, Don discerned his call to pursue pastoral ministry. He enrolled at Drew Theological School in Madison, NJ, and graduated with highest honors. He served at Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church as Associate Pastor for Outreach and Evangelism, followed by Acting Head of Staff in May, 2015. Shortly thereafter, Don sensed God's hand in directing him to pursue his current position as Senior Pastor of Silver Spring where he began in January, 2016. He says, "Beth and I are convinced that the Spirit is calling me to walk alongside the congregation as together we follow Jesus Christ in leading lives of even greater faithfulness."

Our Leadership

Each Presbyterian congregation has a governing body of persons, elected from their active membership, as Elders, serving a three year term. This group of Elders makes up the Session. The Session has the responsibility for overseeing the life of a particular congregation

Silver Spring's Session is made up of 21 Elders, a Clerk of Session, and the Pastor. The Pastor is the Moderator of the Session. Like a Pastor, Elders are ordained to their ministry.

The Session is organized into various committees, most of which are open to members and friends of the congregation. Through these committees, the Session keeps the congregation focused on the mission of Christian "worship, fellowship, and discipleship."

Board of Deacons

Deacons are elected from the active membership of the congregation, serving a three year term. The principle focus of Silver Spring's Deacons is a ministry of compassion and kindness directed towards members of the congregation and folks living in the immediate community.

Silver Spring's Board of Deacons is made up of 32 Deacons with 2 being Youth Deacons. The Youth Deacons are elected to a one year term. Like the Pastor, the Deacons are ordained to their ministry as well.

For listings of the current members of these boards, please refer to the Resources section.
